Occupying an entire city block and encompassing 320,000 square feet today, the Inn began as a two-story adobe guesthouse in 1876. In 1903, Frank Miller began to expand the original facilities, a process that took more than 30 years to complete. The finished project incorporates design elements from throughout the southwestern United States and several Mediterranean countries, with a particular influence from the California missions, and the work of several California architects including Arthur Benton, Myron Hunt and G. Stanley Wilson. The Inn represents a blending of architectural elements, flying buttresses, domes, a bell tower, clock towers, interior courtyards and patios, a five-story open-air rotunda and a circular wrought-iron staircase. The AAA Four Diamond, Historic Mission Inn Hotel & Spa is a National Historic Landmark and a member of Historic Hotels of America. Filled with priceless antiques and artifacts, the Inn offers tours of the property through the Mission Inn Foundation that operates the on-property museum.
